James F. Graves received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and his law degree from Wayne State University. He is licensed to practice in Michigan and Illinois. Since his admittance to the practice of law in 1972, Mr. Graves has served as President of the Ingham County Bar Association and the Ingham County Bar Foundation. He is also a past Regional Chair of the State Bar of Michigan Access to Justice Fund and a past member of the State Bar Judicial Qualifications Committee.

Mr. Graves is recognized by The National Trial Lawyers organization as a “Top-100 Trial Lawyer.” He has also been recognized in the field of personal-injury litigation by both The Best Lawyers of America and Michigan Super Lawyers each year since 2006. In 2004, the Ingham County Bar Association honored him with the “Leo A. Farhat Outstanding Attorney Award.” Most recently, The Best Lawyers in America named James Graves the “Lansing Personal Injury Lawyer of the Year” – for the second year in a row.

Currently, Mr. Graves is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, the Michigan Association for Justice, and the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association. He also co-authors the “Toxic Torts” Section of the Michigan Causes of Action Handbook, which is published by the Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE). Mr. Graves is Vice President and a Board Member of the John D. Voelker Foundation, a non-profit organization established to honor former Michigan Supreme Court Justice John D. Voelker, also known by his pen name, Robert Traver, and author of "Anatomy of a Murder." The Foundation awards law school scholarships to Native Americans, provides funding for the prestigious "Robert Traver Fly Fishing Writing Award" published annually in Fly Rod & Reel magazine, and provides financial support for the preservation of Trout habitat.
