Introduction to Dog Bite Injury Cases

Under Michigan law, dog owners are responsible for making sure their pets do not harm others. Dog attacks can be vicious and the injuries sustained can be life altering and sometimes even fatal. Michigan law places legal responsibility on the owner of a dog in an unprovoked attack, regardless of whether the attack took place on private or public property. In addition, owners of dogs may have legal liability where the dog does not bite the victim, but rather causes the victim to otherwise sustain injury, such as by falling. Although these injuries do not involve a “dog bite,” they do involve “dog injury” and, therefore, they may be legally compensable.
